چکیده

Recent research has established the potential for computer generated virtual characters to act as virtual patients (VP) for the assessment and training of novice clinicians in interpersonal skills, interviewing, and diagnosis. These VPs are embodied interactive conversational agents who are designed to simulate a particular clinical presentation of a patient’s illness with a high degree of consistency and realism. In this chapter we describe the architecture developed for virtual patients, and the application of the system to subject testing with virtual patients that exhibit a set of clinical conditions called Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The primary goal of these conversational agents was evaluative: can a VP generate responses that elicit user questions relevant for PTSD categorization? The results of the interactions of clinical students with the VP will be discussed. This chapter also highlights a set of design goals for increasing the visual, physical and cognitive realism when building VP systems including the design of the language, scenarios and artwork that is important when developing these characters. Finally, future research directions and challenges will be discussed for conversational virtual patients. DOI: 10.4018/978-1-60960-617-6.ch011

Embodied Conversational Agents: A New Kind of Tool for Motor Rehabilitation?

In this paper, we follow a pluridisciplinary approach to propose a concept of emotional and social interfaces. This concept has been developed in a social and emotional behavioral model for Embodied Conversational Agents (ECA) in the context of virtual therapy. In our paradigm, a virtual therapist interacts with a patient in order to guide and encourage him to fulfill their exercises. We are in...

Embodied conversational agents in computer assisted language learning

This paper describes two systems using embodied conversational agents (ECAs) for language learning. The first system, called Ville, is a virtual language teacher for vocabulary and pronunciation training. The second system, a dialogue system called DEAL, is a role-playing game for practicing conversational skills. Whereas DEAL acts as a conversational partner with the objective of creating and ...

An Embodied Conversational Agent with Asperger Syndrome

We discuss the development of an embodied conversational agent with Asperger-like communication skills. The agent was developed for use in educational software in a virtual environment specifically aimed at autism spectrum disorder software. We describe the design and implementation of the agent, and pay particular attention to the interaction between emotion, personality and social context. A ...

Increasing Cultural Awareness by Games with Embodied Conversational Agents

In this paper we describe a research project that aims at providing a learning environment with virtual characters to train culture-specific nonverbal behavior in order to avoid unnecessary irritations in cross-cultural communication. It is shown that the use of virtual characters in the form of embodied conversational agents is beneficial for such an application. After a general description of...
